Group M

We decided to do our group 4 project on the mechanics of the toilet. The toilet works with a siphon which is a tube which resembles the shape of an "s". To active the siphon enough water has to be present into a
tank ready to be quickly flushed into the bowl of the toilet. The whole is known as a siphon jet, it release most of the water directly into the siphon tube, in about 3 seconds. It is enough to fill and activate the siphon effect and all of the water and waste is sucked out. What is special about the siphon is its "s" shape which permits clean water to block the siphon tube, this prevents bad smell and bacteria from getting inside the house. What we investigated is the two curvatures of the siphon and their distance from one another. The more the distance the less time it would take for the toilet to flush. At a distance of 30 cm it took 47 seconds, with a distance of 60 cm it took 32 seconds and with a distance of 90 cm it took 29 seconds. The amount of water used was 6 litres.
